Ball Control

Controlling the ball with the inside of the foot
Explain:
The ball can be controlled with the inside of the boot but the ball must be kept within reach at all times.

Practice:
Have players move up the field and back using the inside of both feet to control the ball.
As they are moving, the coach should shout “stop” and all players must stop the ball with the sole of the foot.

Controlling the ball with the outside of the foot
Explain:
The outside of the foot can be used to control the ball in the same way as the inside.

Practice:
Have players move up the field using the outside of either foot.
They must maintain control and be able to stop the ball on command.
Players may then practice using both the inside and outside of the foot to move the ball up the field.

Keeping the ball away from an opponent
Explain:
It is important to keep your body in the way of an opponent getting to the ball.  This is when you use the outside of the foot furthest away from an opponent.

Practice:
In pairs, keep the opponent away by using the outside of the right foot and then try it using the outside of the left foot.  Always keep the opponent on the far side of your body.

Controlling the ball with the sole of the foot
Explain:
The ball can be controlled with the sole of the foot; the ball can be pushed forward or pulled back using the sole.

Practice:
Pushing the ball forward then pulling it back and moving the other way.
Push the ball forward using the sole of the boot, keeping control and then pull the ball back using the sole of the boot.

Extra Ball Control Drills

Roll ball forward with the inside of the right foot then move it with the inside of the left foot.
Keep your eyes on the ball and make sure you do not push it too far forward that you lose control of the ball. You must be able to stop the ball at anytime. To stop the ball, place the sole of the foot on the ball.

Play red light/green light.  Have players move around within your given area, call red light to have them stop, using either method to show control of the ball and green light to start dribbling again.

Have players run up the field controlling the ball with the inside and outside of both feet.  On command #1 (any word you choose) they must stop the ball and use the sole of the foot, pull the ball around in a complete circle and continue running forward.  On command #2 (again any word you choose) the players stop the ball and pull it back, turn and run the other way.
