Passing the Ball

Passing with the inside of the Foot
Explain:
This pass is used for short passing and is the most accurate way of passing the ball.  The ball must be hit with the inside of the foot.  Keep your eyes on the ball and push your foot through the ball.

Practice:
Get the players to form two lines about 10 yards apart.  Players then pass the ball to each other using the right foot and then the left.  When the coach is satisfied with this, the players then form pairs and move up the field passing the ball from one to the other using both feet.

Passing with the outside of the Foot
Explain:
This is also used as a short pass.  The ball is hit with the outside of the boot and should only be used as a short pass.

Practice:
In pairs, players move up the field passing the ball with the outside of both feet.

Long pass using the instep
Explain:
In order to pass the ball long distances the ball must be hit with the instep (lace of the shoe).  Keep your eyes on the ball, follow through with the foot (this gives the direction).

Practice:
In pairs, players stand about 20 yards apart and try to pass the ball to each other making sure they use the instep and follow through.

Through ball
Explain:
This term is used to describe a ball that is pushed forward between the defense for a team mate to run on to.  This pass can beat the defense without going near a player.

Practice:
Two players in defence are passive (do not move).  Player one pushes the ball between them for player two to run around the outside to collect the ball.
Once the coach is satisfied with the practice, it can then be done again with active defenders.

Square Pass
Explain:
This term is used to describe a pass to a player who is in line with you.
This can be either a short or a long pass.

Practice:
In pairs have the players pass the ball square (in line with you).
Then moving forward, stop the ball and pass it in line to the other player.

Back Heel Pass
Explain:
This pass is seldom used and then only when you are sure a team mate is behind you and in position to receive the ball.  The ball is hit with the back of the foot.

Practice:
In pairs, one player runs forward with the ball and back heels it to the other player.

Head Pass
Explain:
This can be used with any ball in the air.  As an example, on a throw in, the ball can be passed with the head to another player.

Practice:
In groups of three, a player throws the ball to player one who directs it with the head to player two.

Chest Pass
Explain:
This is similar to the head pass and can be used by turning the chest in the direction you want the ball to go.

Practice:
The same as the head pass.
