Dead Ball Plays

Free Kicks both Direct and Indirect
Explain:
A direct free kick is one in which the player taking the kick is able to score direct from the kick.
An indirect kick is one where the ball must be touched by a player other than the kicker prior to going into the goal.
The referee will indicate an indirect free kick by holding his arm in the air
A free kick may be taken as soon as the kick is awarded.
When a free kick is awarded, all opposing players must be atleast 10 yards away from the ball.

A direct kick on a goal
Show players how they should line up infront of the goal (girls-hands at sides; boys-cover groin area)
Stand shoulder to shoulder, preventing the ball from passing by.
Have another player take a shot on the net.

An indirect kick on the goal
An indirect free kick having a player pass to the second player who will take a shot on the net.

Practice:
Have players practice a direct kick from the 18-yard box. Then with the indirect kick have the kicker pass the ball to another player for the shot on goal.

Penalty Shot
Explain:
This is when a direct free kick is awarded for an offence committed in the penalty area (18-yard box)
The kick cannot be taken until the referee blows his whistle.  The ball must be kicked forward and cannot be played by the same player twice unless either the goalkeeper or another player has touched the ball.  If the ball rebounds off of the goal post or bar the kicker may not play the ball as no other player has touched it.
The ball may be kicked with either the instep, outside or inside of foot.

Practice:
All players including the goalkeeper should practice taking penalty kicks.  For the goalkeeper it will show how wide the goal is and how best the goal can be protected.

Corner kicks
Explain:
When the ball has crossed the end line and was last played by an opponent, a goal kick is awarded.
The ball is placed in the six yard box nearest to the side of the goal which it went out of play.  The ball may then be kicked by either the goalkeeper or any other player.  The ball must pass outside the 18 yard box before it is in play.  Should the ball be touched prior to leaving the 18-yard box, the kick shall be retaken.
A goal kick is an indirect kick.

Throw in
Explain:
A throw in is awarded when the ball has crossed over the side line out of bounds.
The ball must be completely over the side line.  The ball is then thrown into play by a player from the team other than the one who last touched the ball prior to crossing the line.
When taking a throw in, the player must have both feet on the ground outside the side line, the ball must be thrown from above the head using both hands.
The ball may be thrown either forward to an attacker or back to a defender.
When defending a throw in, players should cover the opposition players.

Practice:
Have players partner up, standing 10 yards apart.  Alternately have them throw the ball to one another.
For increased difficulty add more players both offence and defence.
